If the Bible were the word of God, it would be scientifically accurate. Yet it is not scientifically accurate. There is no evidence of a worldwide flood, and nothing but evidence against it. The universe was not created in 6 days, it is 14.5 billion years old. The Earth goes around the sun, not the other way round. Snakes cannot talk. Rabbits do not chew cud. If a brother and a sister have kids together, they will be deformed and retarded. And so on.

I'd reverse those priorities. Developing alternative energy should be number 1. We should approach this task the way we approached beating the Russians to the moon. Drilling our own reserves should be thought of as a stopgap measure in the weaning process, like methadone to a heroin addict. ANWAR alone is not going to solve our energy problems. It won't even come close. So it's silly for the Palin crowd to chant "drill baby drill," when it is such a deeply inadequate solution.

It's OK. I think the source of this common misconception is that Alaska does have the largest reserves in the US; problem is, the US =/= the world. Alaska should be thought of as a band-aid, nothing more.

Russia and Germany were allies when the war broke out. They’d signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, which was a non-aggression pact that provided for the partitioning of Europe into separate Russian and German spheres of influence. The invasion of Poland was a joint German-Russian venture. Russia invaded from the east 16 days after Germany invaded from the west. This too was part of their agreement. Only when Germany broke the terms of the pact, and invaded Russia in 1941, did Russia join the Allies.

They were ideologically opposed, but convenience trumps ideology any day. Conflicting ideologies didn’t prevent Russia from allying with the capitalist US, UK and France, or the Chinese nationalists under Chiang Kai-Shek, Mao’s enemy.

But I was overstating the case to say they were “in bed.” The relationship wasn’t as cozy as that suggests.

Forget the Down's baby and the 17-year old unwed/pregnant daughter. They don't matter.
