Democracy. Should a leader do what the public want?

American Democracy? As the most democratic nation on Earth Americans firmly believe that THEIR leader should ALWAYS do exactly what THEY want! In Britain that is not always the case. This is a poll that anyone can vote on but it is primarily a (Relatively short) opinion poll aimed at Americans on what they think Britain should do concerning the American President Donald Trump. The questions are a bit long due to polarized political opinions. British politicians are always sitting on the fence when Americans are telling us to get off it and do something, that is why there are no middle of the road answers here. The reason being is because if the UK was as democratic a nation as the United States of America, then right now our two countries would be on the verge of an Anglo-American Cold war instead of beginning a new age of cooperation. Our PM is considering throwing away all democratic ideals just to stay friends with America.

In a democratic country should a democratically elected leader ALWAYS do exactly what the voting public want them to do?
Yes always! That's democracy. The leader should always do want their people want them to do!
NO!Most of the general public do not know the first thing about running a country or anything about international relations. An elected leader should ALWAYS do the RIGHT thing that is best for EVERYONE! Not go along with things that are blatantly wrong that the public SAYS they want.
Should the leader of a country strive for peace and friendship at any cost?
Yes! The most unjust peace is still better than a 'just war' because you will inevitably still end up killing innocent people. (So we help North Korea build lots of Nuclear Reactors to give all their people cheap clean energy and we let all Somali pirates off the hook for attacking ships and we praise China on their human rights record and methods for keeping their own population down! After all, they are all improving their own counties economies!)
No! The only thing people who instill fear in others understand is a show of force! You should always stand up to Bullies and Terrorists. A Rogue nation will never agree to stand down peacefully unless you use 'Gunboat diplomacy'. You have to show Dictators that we are prepared to fight to the death! (The mentality of showing other countries that we were prepared to fight, is exactly what caused both world wars. It was basically an invitation to "Come and 'ave a go if you think your 'ard enough!)
Back in the 18th century when ALL of America was pro slavery William Wilberforce was the only Abolitionist MP who managed to get himself elected to the British Parliament because he was independently wealthy. All other MPs election campaigns were paid for with profits from the slave trade. Apparently however, there were 2 other MPs who were against the slave trade who sat in on Abolitionist meetings, but they always opposed Wilberforce attempts to end slavery in parliament. Your opinion on them?
They were hypocrites! No better than every other lying politician. They were just trying to keep themselves in power.
They were savvy politicians who were just doing what the public wanted, which was keeping slavery going regardless of their own personal views that slavery was wrong.
Once Slavery had been Abolished in Britain and Napoleon Bonaparte had been identified as "The First Great Evil" predicted by Nostradamus (Hitler of course being the second great evil) Britain put out a 'call to arms to get rid of him' to every great power on Earth. All major countries were invited and all of the countries except one voted to overthrow Napoleon. The United States Government is the ONLY government that abstained! Why do you think that was?
Because France is Americas closest ally like Obama said!
Being a revolutionary pro-slavery country the United States saw the anti-slavery British Monarchy as its staunched political enemy so was infinitely more interested in fighting against Britain as often as possible. Napoleon was not a concern to them. The British, however were a major problem.
The American Government should always support revolutionary countries who overthrow monarchies and help create Republics. But they didn't want to end up a 'Pariah' so quietly stayed out of the voting. (and in American history lessons American support for the Bonapartists has always been swept under the metaphorical carpet because no American government would ever admit to the public that they were actually supporting the 'bad guys') (But we all know that the US Government does that sort of thing all the time - Dazo)
The America public at the time saw The British Empire as the biggest threat to the world, not Napoleon, so by siding with the Bonetarists and oposing Britain the US Government was only doing exactly what all the American people wanted them to do.
To all Americans. Should the UK Prime minister Theresa May support Donald Trump or should she do what the public want instead?
The PM should just say "F*** you!" to the British public and claim that Donald Trump being US President is the best thing since sliced bread! (Of course this would be Political suicide - Dazo) American response - "Its true. But I don't care what happens to the Prime Minister
The PM should just say "F*** you!" to the British public and claim that Donald Trump being US President is the best thing since sliced bread! (Of course this would be Political suicide - Dazo) American response - "Its true. But Trump is a Billionaire, so he can just bankroll Theresa May's next election campaign to make sure she wins and she gets re-elected. More tea vicar?"
As a believer in democracy Theresa May should do absolutely everything in her power to put an end to Donald Trumps so obviously un-American administration! He needs to be stopped! (And end any possibility of rekindling the Special UK - US relationship. -Dazo - American response. - What special relationship?
As a believer in democracy Theresa May should do absolutely everything in her power to put an end to Donald Trumps so obviously un-American administration! He needs to be stopped! (And end any possibility of rekindling the Special UK - US relationship. -Dazo - American response. - "Erm..... Our special relationship wont be over....... erm... we can start again...... we will make Bernie Sanders our next President..... Honest! :))
To everyone who is not a US Citizen. Should the UK Prime minister Theresa May support Donald Trump or should she do what the public want instead?
The PM should just say "F*** you!" to the British public and claim that Donald Trump being US President is the best thing since sliced bread!
As a believer in democracy Theresa May should do absolutely everything in her power to put an end to Donald Trumps so obviously evil and preduice Neo-Nazi administration!(And end any possibility of rekindling the Special UK - US relationship. -Dazo. Voter. - So what? I don't care about that. I just don't want that Greedy, Racist bastard in the oval office!
As a believer in democracy Theresa May should do absolutely everything in her power to put an end to Donald Trumps so obviously evil and prejudiced Neo-Nazi administration!(And end any possibility of rekindling the Special UK - US relationship. -Dazo. Voter. - Not necessarily. The UK could try to start all over again when the next Democrat gets elected president. They cant be any more anti British than Obama was. Right? :) (Things can always get worse - Dazo)
Americans. What would you do if you were the Prime Minister of the United kingdom?
Start a revolution in the British Isles to fight for 'The American way' and back up every single idea and policy that Donald Trump has! (regardless of how ridiculous it may sound to British ears.) "The United kingdom is practically the 51st state already. I would want to keep our Anglo-American Alliance!"
Knowing you are running what is effectively a Socialist country in comparison to The United States of America and the British way of doing things is diametrically opposite to the American way of doing things. "I would put as much political pressure on Trump as I possibly could to make him change his policies. He maybe technically an ally but he does not represent our peoples views.
Knowing the British way of doing things is diametrically opposite to the American way of doing things you would just do whatever it is the British public wanted. "I would want to put pressure on Trump like the public told me to do to make him change his racist policies but as soon as it starts to cripple our economy and the people lose interest I will do what every successful politician does, and go back on my word. I've got to give the public what they want."
To everyone else. What would you do if you were in charge of a country that was trying to secure making an important deal with the United States that requires friendship and utmost respect but your people all want you to condemn him and cut off relations with him for being racist!
I would back up every single idea and policy that Donald Trump has! It will make both me and my country rich! :) Stuff you peasants!
Knowing you are running what is effectively a Socialist country in comparison to The United States of America and the British way of doing things is diametrically opposite to the American way of doing things. "I would put as much political pressure on Trump as I possibly could to make him change his policies. I don't care if it results in America being our enemy. I would always do the right thing and oppose Draconian political leaders like Trump even at the expense of my own countries position. (You would never make it as a politician. - Dazo)
"I would just do whatever my people wanted regardless of how ludicrous the general public can be. Elected leaders are servants of their own people and that is all that matters. I would always give them exactly what they asked for!" (even if it meant running your own country into the ground or starting a war? -Dazo)
Will you leave a comment explaining why you think the PM should go against the wishes of the UK people? Will you leave a comment explaining why you think the PM should do what the British people want and risk turning the USA from being our closest Ally into an enemy.
Yes I will leave a comment on the message board.
No. I want to sit on the fence.
