How much do you think Jimmy Carter, the president at the time of the crisis, did to free the hostages?
He did a lot and was the main reason they were freed
He did some stuff, but it didn't make much of a difference
He did basically nothing and was the main reason the hostages were kept so long
Jimmy Carter decided, after it was clear that the Iranians weren't going to free the hostages unless we met their demands, to perform a secret rescue mission to free the hostages, known as Operation Eagle Claw. He sent a number of transport planes and eight helicopters to Iran on the night of April 24, 1980. The mission failed because two helicopters broke down because of a sandstorm and another was damaged when landing. When the mission was aborted, the aircraft took off again and one of the helicopters grazed a plane and crashed, killing 8 servicemen. Although these were all a string of accidents that were out of anyones' hands, Carter took the full blame for it and it had a severe impact on his re-election. Was it unfair to blame Carter for the failed mission?
Yes
No
Despite facing low approval ratings and a tough re-election, Carter didn't give up on the hostages and planned another rescue attempt, this time using highly modified aircraft that is now used as main tactical airlifters around the world. But during a demonstration on October 24, one of the planes accidentally crashed. By the time they had repaired the aircraft, Carter had already lost his re-election and they were forced to abandon the rescue attempt. This didn't affect Carter's apporval at all, and some blamed him for doing little to free the hostages. Do you think that people also unfairly blamed Carter in this case to?
Yes
No
Even though Reagan had won the election, Carter made one final attempt to free the hostages. His administration began fruitful and fierce negotiations with Iran with the help of Algerian diplomat Abdulkarim Ghuraib. Iran was already more eager to solve the situation since Iraq was invading Iran at the same time. This was known as the Algerian Accords. Under pressure from the invasion of Iraq and the Algerian Accords, Iran finally freed the hostages on January 20, 1981, exactly 20 minutes after Reagan was sworn in as president. Is it fair to say that Carter was mainly responsible for freeing the hostages?
Yes
No
For those that though Reagan was mainly responsible for freeing the hostages, has your opinion changed at all?
