If you care about your friend as much as you say... first you should be honest and tell her what you did. Give her the oportunity to protect herself from future invations. Then you need to deal with whatever she feels she needs to do. Personally I wouldn't want a friend like you.

All children will do things they are not supposed to do. That is how they learn. There are many ways to handle that other than spanking or humiliating in any form. When you spank, scream, ridicule or and other form of abuse you are telling the child they are no good and will not amount to any thing. There are positive ways to reenforce the "good" traits we want our children to have, but the very most important thing is to be a good example and it sounds as if you have no idea how to be a good example. If you don't get parenting advice you are condeming your children to a life of low self esteem and misery.
