For what it's worth I have one daughter who's now 5. I've never spanked her in public but I have in private - for being rude, disruptive, lying or taking/damaging other people's property (in the home I mean) Light spankings might have been given standing but "judicial" ones were OTK/bending over. Apart from my hand I can recall using a wooden spoon and a shoehorn, never for more than 20 swats. I've sent her to her room/taken things away from her but never explicitly "punished" her with anything else.
However one thing I learned very well from my parents is when she does anything naughty to check the "bowel movement diary" to see if maybe she's acting up because she's constipated. In which case, sometime after the spanking I'll put something in her to help her do a s'hit (suppository, soap stick) and her attitude definitely improves after that! There's an old saying "children should keep their mouths shut and their bowels open" - maybe that sounds disgusting but it means the same thing as the other old saying "if you want to regulate their deeds, first regulate their doos"
