Homophobia in American Schools (Americans age 12-18)

I am not homophobic and a lot of people think that christians are homophobis. Yes, some are, but not all of us. I don't mind being around gay people at all. I have quite a few gay friends and it really doesn't matter. It hasn't affected our friendship or anything like that.
In my school there is a lot of homophobia. I know someone in my school who beat up on someone purely because he is gay which is wrong. In my school everyone is so paranoid and afraid of people thinking they are gay which is irritating. The guys never shower becasue they are afraid of being seen nude in front of other guys. If I took a shower after gym they would probably seriously beat me up.
There are gay people who've came out of the closet as you could say, but they only tell some close friends like me.
In my opinion hating someone purely because they are gay is not any better than hating someone purely because they are black, jewish, etc.
I'm really really sick of this in my school and I wish it could change.
