When I was your son's age, I thought that I would never want boxers because they would feel weird worn only as underwear. But then I wore a pair and I found that they were much more comfortable, and my position quickly reversed. I then asked my mom to buy me boxers (and I wasn't even in sports). If he has to change in a lockerroom, I say that you should get him the boxers to save him the humiliation. I personally wear boxers 90% of the time, but I have 3 pairs of boxer-briefs in case I am doing something that requires more support, but I don't want all the bunchiness that constantly begs to be "adjusted" during the day if you get my drift. I think most boys around that age will migrate toward boxers, so just buy them those, and a pair of (relatively) inexpensive boxer-briefs in his size. He will appreciate this, and If he wants you to buy him more underwear, he will ask you and gently nudge you toward what he wants.
