Shopping for a skirt can be a bit difficult online because skirts are usually sized 2, 4, 6 or 1, 3, 5 (and larger) rather than by waist. Some online stores give you a chart to help convert waist size to skirt size, but Ive been mislead on several occasions.
Bottom line is that there is no better substitute for trying one on and that does mean a trip to the store. But, do check out the online shoppes to see what they have to offer -- that can help you limit the number of stores you have to visit. If you live in the states, shoppes like American Eagle, or The Gap or Old Navy are great places to find denim skirts.
I think denim looks best, but that is simply my opnion.
Best of luck!
I call them Christopher Robin shoes -- I seem to remember that in the old Pooh books he wore similar shoes.
I used to have a pair of Doc Martin MJs, and currently have a pair of Keen's that I love. The Keen brand has a slightly different version of them out this year and I will likely get a pair of those. Have a butchers at these:

The ones I have have a metal buckle and I prefer the 'Portland' because it too has a buckle.
