Posted in SHOES OFF PUNISHMENT DOES IT STILL EXIST? on 2008-07-07 18:24:34

One could only "buy back" his or her shoes with a pencil if forgetting the pencil was the offense. Sometimes other punishments were given along with a shoes confiscation and these punishments like lines or detentions or cleaning the room at the end of the day had to be served and completed to get the shoes back in addition to having to spend a certain amount of time in socks. If we were caught wearing street shoes on the gym floor we lost our shoes and did not get them back at all. Sometimes students would just let the teacher keep the shoes instead of doing a punishment assignment to get them back. I remember one day when a student had his shoes taken for having no pencil, a common offense for having shoes taken away. This was a studennt who normally did not get into trouble but one day he was caught not having a pencil so the teacher asked for his shoes. He handed them over to her. Later on we heard each shoe drop into the black barrel where the confiscated shoes were kept. The student was somewhat in a state of shock after the shoes were taken away. All he could say for the rest of the day was, "She took my shoes."

Another experience to relate. At the beginning of class, we always had inspection. We were required to have a pen or pencil, our textbook and workbook with us every day. Each day we had to show the teahcher we had all these things. If we did not have all our materials: socks. We had to "buy" what we did not have from the teacher and the price was a pair of shoes. The slogan was "show me you books or give me your shoes." Those unprepared lost their shoes and the teacher locked them up. There were times that people would ask for their shoes back, usually for some activity where it was more comfortable and easier to have shoes on after that they would give them back to the teacher. The teacher would then remind us, "They are not your shoes anymore, they are my shoes." At the end of the day you could buy your shoes back for the cost of books and pencil. One student lost her textbooks which meant being in socks every day for the rest of the year. Yet, this girl always brought a second pair of shoes with her that she kept in her bag. After she gave the teacher her shoes each day she would then put on the pair she had in her bag. Did you ever see this? How was it handled when someone who was shoes off punished had extra shoes with him or her? Others had been doomed to socks for losing books but did not do the extreme measure of bringing extra shoes with them.

Thanks for your reply. I have a couple more expereinces to relate. On time in elementary school we were having a shoe flinging contest to see who while on a swing could kick their shoes the farthest. The shoes were spread out all over the playground and the teacher saw them there, collected them and threw them in the trash. That was our punishment. There was also this one student who always tried to "dare" the teacher. The rule was if you did not have your pencil then you were shoes off punished. He said that he was not going to bring his pencil to class and he would not take off his shoes. When the teacher asked for the shoes he refused even though others had accepted responsibility for no pencils by handing over their shoes. Eventually he was in socks like the rest of the offenders. He would always try to recover his shoes and sometimes he could till the teacher started locking them up. One time he demanded the shoes back but the teacher refused. There was nothing he could do because the shoes were locked away and he did not have the key. It turned out that he got in trouble at home for having holes in his socks as a result of a previous shoes off punishment and did not want that to happen again.

If your shoes are uncomfortable take them off. If you can't find shoes that work for you, go in your socks as much as you can. It's that simple. Everyone's feet are different and no shoe fits any foot perfectly. The more I go in socks, the more foreign shoes feel on my feet.
