Underwear: go commando. Swimwear: bikini or thong when you aren't allowed to be nude. Wish I had started doing those when I was a teen instead of waiting until my 40s!

If you will really wear a thong swimsuit when you sunbathe at a beach, pool, etc., then that's a good way to tan. Otherwise, tan in the nude, then your tan line (or lack thereof) will always match whatever suit you wear.

I go nude when it's legal to be nude. So, no, I didn't get arrested because it was legal.
I wear a g-string if nude is not legal. If g-string is not legal, I wear a thong. If thong is not legal, I probably go somewhere else, but would wear a Speedo/bikini.
If a Speedo/bikini is not legal, I won't be there, anyway!

I'd like to add something, but you have hit every major point. Treat whatever suit you WANT to wear as the "normal" suit of the beach/pool. Join the rest of the world. Other guys typically start wearing a Speedo when they see someone else DO IT!

Living in undies (or less) is great for a kid. Adult guys probably should wear a Speedo/bikini or maybe a thong.
