The doctrine of papal infallability is a strong affirmation by Catholics that God is always with his Church and will not let it fall into error on important matters conerning faith and morals.
The teaching asserts that when the pope as Bishop of Rome, the Supreme Pastor and Teacher of the Church makes a pronoucement on matters of faith and morals in very specific circumstances he is protected from making an error by God.
The charism of infallability is a gift from God for the Church to ensure that it's mission will ultimately be accomplished.
It is a gift exercised very rarely by the pope and is for the Church rather than for him personally.
It does not mean that the pope cannot sin or make errors like the rest of us. History clearly shows this to be the case with many popes.
And like the rest of us, the pope is and needs to be redeemed by Jesus Our Risen Lord.
