Thankyou for your long and thoughtful reply, and I think I understand your point of view, and am sure your sons earn good lessons from the (I hope) occassional hard thrashings you give them.

I did not mean to suggest that an ice cream or a movie or anything else like that would be sufficient for a boy to try and earn a thrashing. What I meant was the brother nor being licked might think "my brother who was naughty is getting an ice cream, and me, who was good isn't getting one". To me, at least, that would seem to be sending the wrong message.

I can see you need and want to show the punished boy that you still love him and want to do nice things for him. My Dad used to do that just by the things he'd say after a licking. After that we'd put it behind us, and he's carry on doing nice things for all of us, not just the naughty kid whowas feeling very sorry for himself.

One other thing. since you bring in Biblical justification. I think that the diffrerence between Gods goodness and Gods' eyes, and perhaps you are as wretched as your sons! Perhaps. Would Jesus whip a son?

You've got to do what you think is best for your boys, and I never knew a boy who didn't deserve a few memorable spankings, and like you say, the talk afterwards, and he obvious love is very important.

But I take issue on thisidea if soing something specially nice. I can see why yiu do it, but doesn't your boy, (or more likely his brother) see the ice cream or movie or whatever, as a reward for being naughty enough to get licked?

It was a long time ago Bryce, when getting licked at schol was part of everyone every day expeiriece.

I was in a part of the school yard where I thought (wrongly)we couldn't been seen. I lured Jmmy Anson there, with my freinds there to complete his humiliation, and pulled his pants down. I'd have had his underwear too if I han't heard my name called by the teacher who was now striding towards us. My friends had all evaporated.

I was made to apologise to Jimmy, which was hard because I wasn't sorry, and he'd had it coming.

I was taken to the headmaster who gave me four strokes of the cane. That REALLy hurt. Better than being suspended though
