PLease name one specific accomplishment that qualifies Obama to be president.
Colin MacD: Think out of the box a bit more. There are more than 3 possibilities.
Maybe you could think outside the box and inform us of some of these other possibilities
The predicted rash of 2007 hurricanes didn,t occur.(The cause of the two year Southern US drought).
For real, I am from the SE US and we could use a little global warming before we all dry up to dust and blow away.
BTW isn't it absolutely hilarious how the drought is being blamed on global warming...lol
Hurricanes= global warming No hurricanes = global warming
Nothing like covering all of the bases is there?
Empowering people to take care of themselves is more important than just giving people money, but leaving people to die/starve is not an option for me.
It is not an option for me either. There are a few people who are not able to fend for themselves. We have a responsibility to take care of these people. I don't ncessarily believe that the government has a responsibilty, but we as a society do. Churches, charities, and maybe a few government programs mixed in. Just b/c I would like to see the power and influence of the government lessened does not necessarily mean I want to let people fend for themseleves
Welfare to work plans, job training, mental health and addiction services, and even child care if it is needed are positive approaches to solving these problems.
All of these are great ideas that I am in favor of, if done coreectly. b/c all of these programs, again if done correctly, provide opportunity, not hand outs.
One other thing. I don't think corporate hand outs are exactly the same thing as what we are talking about. When corporations (and people for that matter) get tax breaks, the government is not giving them any money, it is stealing less of their money, there is a difference. Also, the theory behind corporate tax cuts, and tax cuts in general, is that corporations will reinvest that money which will lead to more jobs. It doesn't always work perfectly but its worked pretty well the last three times its been tried (under Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush). Finally, corporations don't pay taxes, that expense is passed on to shareholders, employees, and customers.
I do not necessarily give others the same scrutiny when it comes to this issue b/c they have not made political hay out of the issue of poverty as Edwards has. All I'm saying is that if Edwards really wants to help poor people he has 50 million dollars with which to do so. If he would give just a small portion of it to those in need, that would prove that he is serious.
I think what we disagree on is how to end poverty. Edwards, as well as others from a more liberal perspective tend to see poor people as someone who needs help. Those from a more conservative point of view (although I'm probably not as conservative as you may think I am) see those in poverty as people who need opportunity. Much like the old chinese proverb that says: "give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish feed him for a lifetime."
My take on Edwards, (as well as Clinton, and Obama, and to certain extent many republicans) is that they are just giving out fish, and there's not enough to go around. What we need are leaders who will work to fix the system so that we are creating fishermen who will be able to rise above the poverty that they came from.
