The School Rules were numerous and onerous and any infringement meant to the Head's office for the cane. We were made to bend over the back of a large leather settee and our grey skirts were lifted above our waist and we were normally caned across the seat of our green regulation school knickers. Six was the minimum up to a maximum of twenty four. For really serious offences our knickers were taken down and the cane was applied across the bare buttocks and that was really painful. I was caned at least twice a month and sometimes more than once a week. THe cane left deep red weals which lasted a couple of weeks and my bottom was rarely unmarked. The hardest thrashing I ever had was for being caught in bed with another girl without any clothes on and obviously up to some sexual malpractice! We both received eighteen strokes of the senior cane across our bare bottoms with our knickers round our ankles. We were marked for weeks and by God it hurt more than anything I can remember. But I would still support re-introducing caning in schools for both boys and girls.
