Would you give money to Sun to keep it independent and developing products?
Would you be willing to give Sun Microsystems money just to keep it developing its current hardware and software projects?
Your contribution would:
- fund Sun and keep it independent
- permit you to vote for individuals to sit on an oversight board.
Sun would continue to try to make money as a corporation. This includes charging for products as it saw fit.
This poll is an attempt to quantify the willingness of the Java / Sun community to support Sun and its product offerings.
If a sufficient amount of interest is indicated by this preliminary poll, we are prepared to take the next step in forming an open source community around Sun to support it.
We estimate there are 6 million independent and corporate Java developers throughout the world who could be affected by a Sun takeover. We are idealistically looking for each and every one of the developers to weigh in on this poll and let us know if we should proceed.
To that end, please do forward this poll to parties or individuals you think may be interested in this project or who could help raise interest in this project.
If you're a large corporation (more than U.S. $10 million in assets) or a developer in a large corporation, do you believe it would be in your company's financial best interest for your company to contribute U.S. $1,000.00 (one thousand) per developer per year to keep Sun Microsystems independent if they continued developing the current line of open source software and making it available under the current terms?
666 voters have answered this question.
If you're an independent developer or a developer in a small corporation (less than U.S. $10 million in assets), what amount of money would you be willing to give to Sun Microsystems year over year to keep them independent, continuing to develop their current line of open source software and making it available under the current terms?
