Elgin (Parthenon) Marbles: Should they be returned to Greece?
The Parthenon Marbles, currently on display in the British Museum in London, were removed from the Acropolis (Athens, Greece) in 1801 by the Earl of Elgin, the UK Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
Greece has mounted a campaign for their return to Athens and has constructed a new high-standards museum in Acropolis to host these cultural treasures (if returned).
So far the British Museum has refused calls for their return to Greece.
