Contrary to what most Americans believe, there are actually dozens of recognized political parties in the United States. There are several reasons I have heard that explain why most Americans have only showed favoritism towards the two largest political parties (Democrats and Republicans) including: third party votes get thrown away, those parties are more like interest groups than political parties, party loyalty is more important to people than issues, and that most Americans arent smart enough or at least politically literate enough to look beyond a WHITE or BLACK viewpoint (i.e. Democrat or Republican) as opposed to grey areas. Whether those statements are true or not is irrelevant.
