Is modern democracy a good thing?

the "great experiment" has been going on for 200 years. and while some people might say that the fact it has survived thus far is proof of its validity I thought I would ask do you think that democracy and the other social and legal changes that have happened in the last 200 years or so are a good idea. Note: none of the questions below should be taken to represent my personal feelings.
