Abortion, Religion and Politics - US/UK

This is to help me and others to understand why such widely differing attitudes to abortion exist both within the US and between the US and elsewhere. Do our governments really represent our views? And are opinions really so polarised or do a lot of people occupy the middle ground?

All respondants: Republican voteers/supporters generally seem to be more pro-life/anti-abortion than Democrats. Why do you think this is? (Check as many as you wish)
Republicans are more religious
Republicans just have more respect for life generally

They want more babies to be born because they believe that a higher rate of population growth is good for the American economy, national security, etc
Racial factors - they believe that Caucasian women are more likely to have abortions, and this is affcting the racial balance in a way they don't like
