Let me explain what has been going on in France: Around Paris many people, almost entirely from minority groups in France are rioting (burning cars, burning buses, burning buildings, even attacking police and innocent bystanders). There are a few reasons why they are rioting: 1. for decades minorities in France have called for "Positive Discrimination" (which is the equivalent term for "Affirmative Action"). They have desired "Positive Discrimination" because minorities cannot find good housing, are barred from educational institutions simply because of their ethnicity or national origin, and ultimatley these minorities cannot find good jobs or any jobs at all, as some minority groups experience unemployment as high as 50% in some regions. 2. In the worst regions with the highest unemployment and the highest crime rates, the police are often unjust and often victimize some of the minorities. 3. A national leader named Sarkozy enraged those in the minority classes by calling them "scum." 4. Two young minority men died in a strange way and rumors stirred that the police were responsible for their deaths. The young men in the street directly say that the reason they are rioting is to convince the government to enforce some method of "Positive Discrimination" so that minorities can get an education, good housing, and a good job. The riots spread into Germany. Each location mentioned the need to help minorities get better means to a quality life. Yet, no one in the United States rioted under the premise: "Treat us more fairly." or "We want more jobs or better jobs." Some believe that this proves the value of affirmative action in the United States, that it eases the tension upon minorities so that they don't have to become violent or destructive to be treated fairly. In other words, in the US, if a college tries to limit the amount of minorities it accepts, simply, because they are a minority, the group can bring a lawsuit against that college. Yet, in France, if a college administrator says that he wants to limit minorities in his school, there is nothing that can be done, no law to discourage such practices.
