Does the US need a viable 3rd party

The US has only two viable options when voting (only 1 more than the former USSR). And on most issues these two parties basically agree. Despite the rhetoric, both are pro-new deal, both support a pull-out in Iraq (which Bush has already started). Both are doing nothing about illegal immigration. The only real difference is abortion, and even on that issue most democrats say that life begins at conception, and most Republicans pontificate about being pro-life but do nothing about it. They even agree on homosexual marriage rights, most Dems and republicans support Civil Unions but not marriage.
