unisex toilets
Back in college (I'm 32 now), I was visiting a female friend of mine in her dorm, and I needed to use the restroom. Rather than go back to my own dorm, the friend of the girl I was visiting said she'd watch and make sure no girl entered. I was taking care of my business, when I heard a loud "I don't believe there's a guy in there, you're just making it up!"
The next thing I knew, I heard a group of girls enter. Then one of them said something to the effect of, "Oh, there really IS a guy in here!" They must have looked under the stall doors and seen part of me. I heard a lot of giggling, but none of them left the bathroom.
Embarrassed, I finished what I needed to finish and exited, amidst more giggling on their part. Oh, I was angry, but not at my friend's friend, who did after all try to keep them out. I suppose she could have been more forceful, but I gathered that the girls who entered the bathroom were bully types.
And that was my experience in the "wrong" restroom. If I'd been less embarrassed, I'd have looked one of them in the eyes and said "Fancy meeting you here!"--but I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. And given what my friend told me later about those particular people, I think I made the right choice.
