Is this wise to take away the name of God from our school teachings?
StarGateCode: To elaborate on an earlier point, EVEN IF there was a creator of group of creators behind the universe, it doesn't prove AT ALL that a book written a few thousand years ago explains said god or said mysteries of the universe. There is a huge gap in logic there, and again, this assumes that even a creator/designer of the universe can be proven. It actually makes more sense to me to worship the earth as a goddess since she is constantly "giving birth" to life, but I only believe in even that metaphorically. This is why I often relate to Pagans/Wiccans more than Christians.
totoro and Pete: what's the point? These people are immune to logic. You might as well try to reason with a cat.
Like I said in the other post, all these silly creationist arguments are decades old. They've been discredited and refuted innumerable times. Stick a fork in em; they're done.
I guess it's to be expected that a religion based on a zombie would want to continually raise arguments from the dead...
You can't reason a person out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. You can't educate a person who lives in willful (pig) ignorance.
I've debated creationists...a lot. That phase of my life is pretty much over now. I see that it's an utter waste of time. Scientists have been refuting their same, tired, dead arguments for decades now. The time for engaging these people on the level of logic, reason, and intellectual honesty is long over. We tried that; it didn't work. They don't want to hear it. The only appopriate response then, is not a well-reasoned critique, but mockery and ridicule.

Don't be mean- you never know, a cat might read that and be offended

I guess our only chance is to educate people before they get into such a situation. And that means 'taking the name of god away from our school teachings' Teach what we know, not what some paranoid folk of yesteryear thought they knew. Of course, we should teach about said paranoid folk, in order to learn from their mistakes)

Tralhob: Having debates and discussions with people in these formats is fun for me. I know I may not change peoples minds, but for me, that isn't always the point. I like to find out why people come to the conclusions about things that they do, and I get to rant about stuff myself. Many fundies do see the light sometimes when logic becomes too great to ignore anymore. I also actively fight efforts to infuse religion into politics, public education, or any other format where it could be rammed down the throats of everyone else and/or used to take away peoples rights. If some of these fundies/evangelifascists had their way, America would be a christian version of Iran.
I believe that taking the name of God out of society in public locations and on school grounds is not the wise decision. I understand that people who do not believe in God often take offense by the mention of his presence, but then again, those who do belive in God will be forced to believe that what they have been taught is not but a lie and a myth that people descriminate against when mentioned in society. I do, however, believe that the teaching of religion and debates between which God is the God and if there even is a God should indeed be outlawed in school systems. In history classes we learn of almost every religion, and what the people believed in, but we should never have a teacher tell the class that any one particular religion is right or wrong. If it is somone's religion to prey, then let them prey silently and without explanation of their beliefs to anyone other than their own heart. Never should a person state that their religion is correct, and all who believe it is false are nieve and foolish. Denying the presence of anyone's religion or God is just as bad as saying that that particular religion is false and should be removed from society entirely. Situations such as this are bound to go straight to a court, where people will argue that their rights of freedom of speech and religion from the first amendment of the constitution are being violated and confescated. All of this controversy will eventually begin causing more controversial issues and debate between religions then there has ever been before, which will possibly destroy families, seperate society, and if it reaches a point high enough, cause the third civil war (the second civil war is still being fought today between east coast and west coast gangs).
