Is it time for the US to start lifting its sanctions against Cuba?
I think we should have lifted economic sanctions a long time ago. The Cold War's been over for a while. I think the only reason we have a trade embargo on Cuba is to protect our sugar industry--possibly also to compete for votes from the Cuban exile community in Miami, since Florida is a swing state, but more likely for the former reason. More importantly is that the same politicians who rail against economic protectionism and how bad it is for world relations, seem to be the same ones who strongly advocate this extreme protectionism we're imposing on the products of Cuba. If we're restricting trade because of "communism and human rights abuses", why don't we do so with China? They've committed far more egregious crimes against various persecuted groups, such as the Falun Gong, Tibetans, Uighur Muslims and some Christians as well. Cuba couldn't match that if they tried! Honestly, can anyone think of a GOOD reason we should continue to block trade and contact with Cuba? Seriously, ONE GOOD reason?
