Is Segregation of gender or race good or bad

This is for my debate so vote.

Generally speaking, I would say segregation by race is unnecessary and typically rooted to ignorance. As far as gender, I think there are acceptible situations where segregation is ok. An example would be a men's only health club or a ladies only health club, or P.E. classes where girls and boys have seperate classes. I do however prefer that these seperations be by choice, not by regulation.
