Hi from England. I am a tree-planting hobbyist. I have planted around 850 trees in my life, although I have no land of my own. Just this year I have planted 83 trees in a local park. Small ones are best, because they are cheap, and they get established very quickly, and off they go.

Native species are best. Here in England that means ash, oak, field maple, hornbeam, silver birch, cherry, hazel to name but a few.

Some of my trees are now 40ft in height. I planted those in 1991.

We need a massive worldwide tree-planting campaign in my opinion, especially in places like Africa and Australia. One benefit of trees which you missed, is that they can hold back the spread of deserts. They also create a "microclimate" under the boughs, where humidity is higher, and the air is cooler, so more rainfall is precipitated. They also provide fruit and nuts. So many benefits of trees!! They are a gift of God.

I plan to keep on planting as long as I can. I am also a long-standing member of the Woodland Trust, a British tree organisation.

Bill.

Hi Bill,

I think that the world needs more people like you. Deforestation is going to be one of the many things that bring down the human race (and many animal and plant spiecies {spelling?}). It's great that you have planted 850 trees. I totally agree that we need a tree-planting campaign.

Thanks for pointing out the benefit that I missed. I knew I was forgetting something when I made the poll... I also forgot to mention a downside of trees (OMG, trees have downsides?!?!?!?). Trees, being dark in color, accelerate the warming of Earth. While these effects are slight, they do exist. However, the benefits of trees far outnumber the disadvantages.

By the way, trees were almost made in a way that is convinient for hugging. God is telling us something...

(Sorry about my spelling, I haven't typed anything for a while and my hands are stiff...)
