Creationism and Evolution - True or False
I believe in evolution for the same reasons that I believe that the Earth is round: Most of the smart, relatively unbiased people who have analyzed the question have come to the same conclusion. Since neither question is central to my existence, I haven't bothered to analyze either in-depth for myself.
I am very skeptical of the idea of an omniscient, omnipotent god of love for three main reasons:
Members of a true religion would agree on everything. Those who disagreed would consult God to see who was right. Christianity fails this test because of all the religious fighting that went on in the Middle Ages. How can a Catholic pray and learn that relgious icons are OK while a Protestant prays and learns that they're forbidden?
Why do children die of disease before they're old enough to crawl? Why does God let the devil loose on these children he loves so much? Why are modern men punished for the error of a foolish ancestor who lived thousands of years ago?
Why doesn't God indicate his existence to me in a clear, unmistakeable way? Why can't I walk outside and pray to God to have a grapefruit drop down from heaven? He loves me more than I can possibly imagine, right? Why can't he do this tiny thing for me? I don't even like grapefruits.
I see Creationists as trying to resolve the cognitive dissonance that results when someone thinks science is legitimate but also believes in God's creation. I don't think their position springs from scientific evidence. If it did, I think they would agree on most things--but they don't. Old Earth versus Young Earth is the elephant in the room. Why don't they pray to God, to find out the answer?
