Video Game Sound
Just filled out the poll and thought I would provide some extra info. Currently playing a lot of World of Warcraft. Love the music, but I often turn it off because there's so little of it. (Mostly one piece of music per "zone".) I don't find I do that with many other games, though, because I really appreciate the impact a good soundtrack has. I do use the sound in WoW to figure out where adds (additional enemies that jump you when you are already fighting) are -- since I have 3D audio, it's an extra cue that I really like having.
When I think of games where I "needed the music", it would be puzzle games like Myst where the music was part of the game. I also kind of have a vague memory of watching the opening to the first Wing Commander game many times over because the music really created an emotional environment that got me ready to play the game.
Love the column! =)
