The 1st annual HARLEM JAZZ AWARDS
I've been following the Awards poll for several months now. Glad to see a new breed of musicians mentioned. Especially both male and females vocals. Great to see other worthy candidates. Always wondered what happend to vocalist Geo V Johnson, Jr. The recording he did with Pharoah back in 1980 "Rejoice" was a teaser and great lyrics. He hit us and disappeared. We need to hear more from him. Nice that you recognized him and glad I found this site.

========== George V. Johnson Jr. came out of the jazz closet in 1999, when he started an intense study of the jazz business, while attempting to make a career of singing and composing songs, and raising a family. We ran into him in New Orleans in January, 2000, and immediately decided he was one of the best male jazz vocalists of our time. In the mean time, George sang at several NYC and East Coast jazz festivals, and performed at several Washington D.C. clubs, includingt he BET on Jazz club downtown, where my husband Nick and I heard him perform in May of 2000. We decided to bring George down to our Bed & Breakfast in Albuquerque, New Mexico for our first "Live" recording session, to be released in February, 2002. More info on jazzinn.com. We hope the Awards are at the Apollo also . . . straight ahead!

I've seen Mr Johnson on numberous occassions with James Moody & Lou Donaldson. One time while listening at Sweet Basil George was singing A Night In Tunisia and suddenly everyone heard a trumpet sound coming from out of the back kitchen and to the crowds surprise it was Dizzy Gillespie who just walked up on stage and made everyone go histeric. Moody followed with a solo that blew everyone away. Now that's what I call a Night In Tunisia. It was back in the early 80's. I had made up my mind then that this cat was one of the most soulful, rhythmic, and energetic jazz singers anywhere. He danced and moved like a combination of James Brown & Muhammad Ali, but was singing Bird and Trane, Miles and Dizzy. I could tell by looking at him that he was in a world of his own and having fun. When I looked to the side of the stage Moody and Dizzy were smiling at each other. I Would love to see him perform at the Award Ceremony.
