Topic Saturation

Posted by CSC on 2008-02-21 22:54:13

Hi

Can there be so many polls on a particular subject that people just ignore them due to topic saturation.

Oh, absolutely. In fact, sometimes when we see really high topic saturation, we'll start putting polls on that topic into Limited Interest rather than into the directory. It's not that there was any specific problem with the poll itself, but if the topic is too saturated, there would be limited interest in yet another poll covering the same thing. Sometimes a poll can cover a somewhat saturated topic in a new an interesting way, so it can stand out and still be different, but there does get to be a lot of repetition at times.

Also if a poll is moved into "Limited Interest" does it suffer any reduction of votes?

I haven't actually tested this, but everything else being equal, I would think that "Limited Interest" polls will get fewer votes than a "General Interest" one. That's because "General Interest" polls can be found both through the directory and via poll search. The "Limited Interest" polls can only be found via search and only if you choose "Limited Interest" or "All Polls" in the search type menu.

A good number of people do specifically search "Limited Interest" polls on a regular basis though, so those polls may have their own following that would boost votes higher than you would expect.

i have a poll not placed in directory and it might as well be dead - nobody finds it or does it if it isn't in the list
