Reporting of sex crimes in the media

Do you think the media blow up interest in sex crimes involving children? Do the newspapers print detailed stories to boost sales? I live in the UK and the recent sad case of Madeleine McCann has had saturation news coverage. Even the less serious cases get detailed coverage. Do you think such detailed reporting is justified? Or is it a cynical strategy to increase sales of newspapers? Most people are repelled by these crimes, but the constant media coverage may even encourage those on the borderline of offending.
